Description

Thomas Wentworth Higginson [1823 1911] was an American Unitarian minister, author, abolitionist, and soldier. Higginson was active in the American Abolitionism movement during the 1840's and 1850's and was a member of the secret Six who supported John Brown. During the American Civil War he served as a colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, from 1862 to 1864. After the war Higginson devoted much of the rest of his life fighting for the rights of freed people, women and other disfranchised people. Listed for auction is a [ALS] autograph letter signed by Thomas Wentworth Higginson. The letter is dated Oct 20, 1879 and is signed ''Very truly yours, Thos Wentworth Higginson'' in fountain pen. The letter measures 5.25 x 3.50 inches, it has mounting remnants on the verso otherwise it is in fine condition. The letter is authentic and is a nice example of this prominent American author and abolitionist.
