Description
This is a handwritten letter fromJudge John R. Bassett of Denison,
a town which is the county seat of Crawford County, Iowa.
John Richardson Bassett (1811-1892) was born in Cayuga County, New York,
and became one of the first settlers of Crawford County. He was married to
Sophia Nobles, and had at least three children: Lydia, Charles, and Ellen.
The family moved to Iowa in 1854, and settled in a cabin in Coon Grove,
located about three miles south of Denison. Later, the family moved to
a home about one mile northeast of Dension. Bassett was chosen to be
the county judge, and served for ten years in that office. He also served
at various times as justice of the peace, township clerk, school director,
and road supervisor.
The letter is
dated February 11, 1876. It is addressed to a man
named D. S. Caldwell of Newburyport, Massachusetts. I believe
that this man's full name may have been
David Story Caldwell,
and that he may have been an attorney. The letter was originally
accompanied by a check, and is concerned with a payment on
a piece of property, which (if I read the letter correctly) was being
bought by a man named Carl Reincke.
The letter is handwritten on
an 8" by 5" sheet of paper.
The letter has some handwritten notations, probably written by
the
Mr. Caldwell
to whom the letter was addressed.
The letter is in good condition, with creases where it has been folded.
