Robert Browning SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER from 1878
On note paper, folded in half. Written half is about 4 1/2" x 6 7/8".
Some staining on reverse side of fold (due to having been stored for a time on ribbed adhesive backer) and small piece of tape on reverse side of fold, none of which affects the written side.
Letter gives Browning's address at 19 Warwick Crescent, W and date as Nov. 27, '78.
Text: "Dear Lily, It is very good of you to write as you do: I shall be very happy to see you and so with my sister. To-morrow we are engaged all day: but on Friday morning at any time that suits you, I shall be at home, if you can call. Most affectionately yours Robert Browning."
Robert Browning (1812–1889) was an English poet and playwright. His verse was noted for irony, characterization, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax.
In 1846 Browning married the older poet Elizabeth Barrett. By his death in 1889 he was seen as a sage and philosopher-poet who had fed into Victorian social and political discourse.
Browning was our mother's favorite poet, and we think our father must have purchased this letter with her in mind.
