    Description

    This is a letter by
    Gustav Oppert
    (1836-1908), a notable
    German professor and Indologist (
    Indology
    is the study
    of the history, languages, and culture of India and its
    surrounding areas).
    Gustave Oppert was the author of many books, including
    On the
    Classification of Languages
    (1879);
    On the Weapons, Army,
    Organization and Political Maxims of the Ancient Hindoos
    (1880);
    Lists of Sanskrit Manuscripts in Southern India
    (two volumes 1880-1885);
    Contributions to the History of
    Southern India
    (1882); and
    On the Original Inhabitants of
    Bharatavarsha of India
    (1893).
    This letter
    is handwritten on a piece of paper, about 7" by 4.5".
    The location is given (as best I can tell) as "2 Barnastrasse, IV,
    Hohenfelde, Hamburg".
    The only date on the letter is October 18. Based on its
    appearance, the letter would seem to date to
    circa 1885.
