    This is a letter
    by
    Emory P. Close
    (1859-1902), who served from 1897
    to 1899 as the
    United States Attorney for the Northern
    District  of New York.
    Earlier in life, Close was
    the official stenographer for the New York State
    Assembly, and was also a
    Supreme Court
    stenographer for the 8th District.
    In 1880 he opened a law office of his own and soon afterward became
    a member of the firm of Thornton, Briggs & Close. In his later years,
    he was one of the most prominent attorneys in Buffalo, New York.
    The letter is dated April 23, 1898, and is addressed to a man named
    Frank S. Bentley
    (1854-1941), who was a
    U. S. Commissioner from
    the town of Horseheads, in Chemung County, New York. Bentley was
    an attorney for more than sixty years, and at different times held such
    offices as U.S. Circuit Count examiner, President of the Horseheads
    Board of Trustees,
    President of the Board of Education of Horseheads
    Union Free School (District 10), and Postmaster of the town of Horseheads.
    The letter is typed on the stationery of the United States Attorney's Office,
    with the name of Emory P. Close printed at the top left corner.
    The letter is 10.5" by 8"
    .
    It is in good/very good condition, with creases where
    it has been folded, and some general wear.
