    Description

Lot of 42 antique handwritten business letters from W.D. Terbell (Corning NY) to Elliott & Ridgway.
A 1868-1869 Gazetteer and Business Directory of Steuben County, N.Y. that I read online noted that W.D. Terbell was a wholesale and retail druggist and "jobbers in paint, oil & glass".
Elliott& & Ridgway were druggists in Mansfield, Pennsylvania.
    Most are from the 1860s.
The letters are about financial transactions/orders.
Things mentioned in the letter include, but are not limited to- liquors, alcohol, brandy, sherry wine, aconite, chimney and burners (presumably for lamps), flasks, oil, kerosene, vaccine virus, ledger, toilet bottles, plaster. Hunt's Liniment, lime, zinc, French dictionaries, camphene, crude borax, coal oil, scales, indigo, cards, books and music, Sander's 5th readers, shades, lamps, leather varnish.
One of the smallest ones is 4-1/4" x 5. One of the largest ones is 7-1/4" x 12". Most are brief notes though a few are longer.
They are folded and they will be mailed folded along existing lines. Tears along some fold lines. Some jagged edges, small holes, creases. Stains- light on most, pronounced on a few. Edge and corner wear including bends, nicks, small tears.
Old paper items often bear remnants of their long lives and previous homes. They may have had past exposure to a variety of environmental conditions such as odors, dust, storage in attics/basements, etc.
