    Description

One page letter from a member of the prominent Briggs family of Providence, Rhode Island. This rather routine letter happens to mention the U.S. Centennial celebration. The letter reads,
    Providence Oct 9th 1876
    Mr. JB Calder
Sir, I am off to the "Centennial" tonight and I see that I have a note which will probably come around before I shall. I enclose a new note and will pay the interest when I return.
    Yours Truly
    [illegible initials.] Briggs
The letter is on paper embossed with an image of the Capitol Building and labeled "Congress"
I spent some time researching the Briggs family, a few of whom served in Congress, but wasn't able to positively identify which member this is. The initials could be "A.R." but that is a guess. The back of the letter is also labeled "[A.R.??] Briggs October 9th 1876
