Description

Antique Divided Back Unused RPPC of the Great Easter Flood of 1913 Showing the Aftermath in Marion, Indiana. I’m somewhat puzzled as to why the card says, “Wreckage in Johnstown” as that flood occurred in 1889 before the era of picture postcards & as far as I know the two floods were not related, although the Johnstown Flood in Pennsylvania was the worst natural disaster in American history and the Great Flood of 1913 was the second worse natural disaster in American history. My only thought is perhaps the postcard designer was comparing the two disasters. The 1913 flood occurred after several days of torrential rains, but is now largely thought to have been made much worse by a lack of flood preparedness at the infrastructure level as well as human misconceptions about the strength of dams and levees. The 1913 flood covered an area of 13 states throughout the eastern and Midwestern United States with Ohio being the hardest hit. The total estimated death toll nationwide is at approximately 650 (with Ohio thought to be at 470). In Marion, Indiana the Mississinewa River flooded its banks and levees burst all over town causing the flooding. The one good thing that came out of the Great Easter Flood of 1913 is that dams and levees were rebuilt and fortified with better standards and legislation for flood prevention and preparedness enacted as well. This is a standard size 5.5” x 3.5”. In good condition according to postcard rating system due to mild corner wear (except the lower left corner is a bit more noticeable.). In addition, there is some edge wear and discoloration across the card. These flaws are not detrimental to the overall good appearance of the card. Please see photo and you be the judge. IMPORTANT POSTCARD SHIPPING INFORMATION: For single postcard purchases, you can choose .75 cents for postage, but there will be no tracking number included. This is called a non-machined letter and is handled in such a way so to not bend it. Please understand that if you choose this option you are making an informed decision to take the risk that should your package get lost, there will be no way to track it and I the seller am not to blame (in terms of giving me negative feedback). I will, however, refund you the full price of the postcard and shipping in the rare event that this happens. On multiple postcard orders, please wait until you hear from me before paying as there are several factors that go into calculated shipping on volume pricing. Please do send me your zip code as soon as you can after making a multiple postcard order, however. I would greatly appreciate that as that will be a factor in calculating shipping costs. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Please ask questions before bidding and let the photos guide you as well. US SALES ONLY PLEASE!! I was a long time seller on eBay some 15 years ago with 100% positive feedback. Bid with confidence! Thanks for looking!!
