1958 Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 77501.
Selmer experimented with different bow lengths in the 1950's and made a small run of medium bow altos like this one. Selmer didn't return to making medium bow altos until 1966, and continued with this design throughout the model's run. Most agree that the medium bow was Selmer's best Mark VI alto design, so this horn is the best of the best: it has early 5-digit Selmer sound and build quality, with a medium bow for improved intonation.
Plus, this horn has a high F# key, which is a must for many players.
This sax was recently acquired from its longtime owner who purchased this horn in Paris, France. The horn likely doesn't have its original lacquer, but the finish is old and has a gorgeous golden patina. My tech just serviced the horn, replacing a handful of pads, corks and felts. The rest of the pads are varying in age, with some old ones mixed in there. All the pads are sealing well, and the horn plays great from top to bottom. The neck is original to the horn and has never been pulled down.
This is a tremendous sounding horn. It has a rare combination of power and richness that is incredibly full and resonant in all registers. The keywork feels great and fluid. This is one of my favorite Mark VI altos that I've had come through the shop in quite some time.
Buyers are free to return the sax for any reason, provided you pay shipping and insurance both ways. Returns are subject to a 3% restocking fee.
