1887 Virginia Democratic Association Headquarters illustrated stationery letter --- heading at upper right reads, Headquarters, Virginia, Democratic Association, Gunton Building, 9th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue --- heading is centered around seal showing the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis. and an image of an armored woman holding a spear with her foot on another, clearly defeated, armored personOfficers listed at upper left, beginning with: H. L. Biscoe, President. M. Wallace, 1st Vice-President. R. C. Glascock, 2nd Vice President. --- below that list is another of Executive Committee, beginning with L. Q. Washington, Chairman. --- letter is dated (partially printed), Washington, D. C., March 14, 1887, and begins, Colonel W. D. Coleman, Dear Friend --- the writer says, “Thank you heartily for your kind interest [o]n my behalf, and which I appreciate most highly.”
He continues, “We had a number of discharges last Monday and again on Saturday, but so far I have luckily escaped.” --- he reflects, “Indeed, I feel no uneasiness, as I am strongly backed by the above Association, as well as by Senator Daniel and Hon. G. D. Wise.” --- he relates, “Have papers on file applying for promotion, but as yet have heard nothing from them.”
He considers, “As to the proof-readership, I regret to say that I can see but little prospects for you, as Mr. Benedict seems to think that none but practical printers should fill those places.” --- he explains, “Those were five of the best proof-readers discharged on Saturday who had been in the office for years. However, if you can command the influence, it would be well to try, though letters simply would accomplish but little.”
He suggests, “You must apply in person (first filing your application with such recommendations as you may have), accompanied by some man of known influence from our state to back you.” --- he details, “If you could get Senator Daniel to take hold of the matter your chances would be good, I think, as he seems to have the inside track with the P.P.”
He warns, “I don’t think Mr. Cabell would have much weight with him just now.” --- he adds, “There is a gentleman from your town named Porter who is employed in the office as copy-holder. Perhaps you know him.” --- he considers, “He says he was once a professor in a college and the editor of one or two papers – the last being the Chatham Tribune I think.”
He apologizes, “Sorry I can’t give you a more cheering report, but it is best to be frank in such matters.” --- signed, I am, dear sir, most respectfully, yours &c., E C C…ness (signature unclear) --- slight soiling with a few more darkly soiled spots --- tiny slits and holes at folded edges and corners; DARK STRIP ACROSS BOTTOM OR SIDES IS THE PLASTIC HOLDER IN THE SCAN
