    Description

This is a nice, original letter from J.H. Rhodes (Secretary) to Thomas Nichol (General Agent) regarding contributions towards the James Garfield memorial.
Its construction began in 1885, and it was dedicated on May 30, 1890. Its cost, 5,000 (,800,000 in 2018 dollars), was funded entirely through private donations. The round tower is 50 feet (15 m) in diameter and 180 feet (55 m) high. Around the exterior of the balcony are five terra cotta panels with over 110 life size figures depicting Garfield's life and death.
The tomb was designed by architect George Keller utilizing Ohio sandstone, with reliefs depicting scenes from Garfield's life. The exterior sculptures were done by Caspar Buberl.
Mr. Nichol was a businessman in agricultural machinery and later in life he was involved in the transition to the presidency for President James Garfield as well as becoming a Judge.
Measures 7.75" x 10.5" and contains two pages as well as original envelope.
Letter has folds but is in good condition overall, envelope has wear that is shown in photos.
