Eight Page Letter by an Itinerant Preacher Newly Settled in Runelsburg, Nebraska. Nebraska: 1881. 8 page manuscript letter, together with original envelope, sent from Isaac S. Carr of Runelsburg, Nebraska in 1881 to T.B. Jarman of Chester, Pennsylvania. Carr was itinerant preacher newly arrived in Nebraska, and provides in this letter extremely detailed descriptions of the prairie, his sod house, and his work as a preacher. In very good condition. Some excerpts follow:
"I will try and tell you something about my prairie home. My Home is 182 miles N. West of Omaha...On the wide prairire. The plain here is about 20 miles wide and is looking lovely today with its dress of green and its innumerable wildflowers...the crops are looking well and we expect a bountiful harvest and as we look around and see acres of waving graing and the rich pasture lands with its herds of cattle, and vegetables all flourishing, we say 'God is good.'"
"I am boarding in a 'Sod-House,' Nebraska brick I call them...The sod is very tough full of the fibres of the rank prairie grass and they cut it into lengths of about a foot and build them up like a stone wall some 2 feet thick, put in their door and window frames...all summer you have your flower garden on top of the house, vegetation on the roof's now is about 10 inches high...some also have only brush laid across the tops and sod on the brush, which makes one think of the close proximity of snakes, there is no floor in some of the houses, the bare ground..."
"My regular appointments cover some 15 miles in extent, I have 25 preaching places each sabbath morning...The people are as a whole kind and intelligent...I preaches 3 times morning afternoon and night and rode a distance of 10 mile there was a quarterly meeting on Saturday afternoon a distance of nine miles from here...I am as brown as an Indian by riding in the sun..."  [8589]
