    Description

Letter (5 ¼” by 8”) and envelope from Stephen O. Elkins of Hersman, Illinois, dated and postmarked (hand cancelled, Hersman, Ill.) 1871, both with advertising print for the S.O. Elkins & Co. store. The letterhead on the letter sheet reads Office of S.O. Elkins & Co., Dealers in Dry Goods, Groceries, &c., Hersman, Ill., and the print on the cover reads If not called for in five days return to S.O. Elkins & Co., Dealers in Dry Goods, Groceries, &c., Hersman, Illinois. The letter was written by Elkins to Ferdinand Darling of Wheelock, Vermont, and acknowledges the receipt of a check payment (with a reference to Dr. Baxter) and gives a little bit of local news. Aunt Ann, wife of Jacob Hersman, had recently died, but the other sick folks in the area were recovering. Stephen O. Elkins (1837-1882) was originally from Wheelock VT and had served as a second lieutenant in the 15
    th
Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. He moved from VT to Illinois in 1866 and established a store in the town of Hersman IL, located in Brown County in western Illinois, near Mount Sterling ILs. Ferdinand Darling (1828-1891) was a prominent farmer in the town of Wheelock VT. The letter and cover are in good or better condition with light wear and soiling. A nice little bit of Hersman IL history!
