Description
Letter by 16 Year Old Future Washington DC Real Estate Developer Brainard H. Warner While Working in a Hospital During the Civil War. Washington DC: 1863. Bifolium measuring 12 x 7.5", with a total of 4pp of handwritten text. A letter dated May 31st, 1863, written by 16 year old Brainard H. Warner while clerking at a hospital Washington DC during the Civil War. Warner went on to become a prominent Washington DC developer and author of "Warner's Popular Guide Book for Washington." He arrived in the city just a few weeks before writing this letter; according to a history of one of his developments, he came as "'an unknown country boy who came to work as a government clerk and who found undreamed of riches in real estate.' A collection of letters quite similar to this one, sent back to his father, were reprinted in the 1930s by the Columbia Historical Society of Washington DC, and the report notes "he was only sixteen when he arrived in the nation's capital but letters to his father back in Pennsylvania show a keen power of observation and maturity." Thus, this letter provides vivid and detailed descriptions of Warner's life in Washington DC: his fashion/dress ("I have to be very particular in my dress, I will send home the two neckties I brought away one, the silk one, was good for nothing the other one is entirely too old to wear in Washington), the impact of the war on the hospital ("Three poor soldiers have died here this morning and there are many more who will die"), the food ("Oranges are 5 and 10 c apiece here now apples the same...we get pie & cake & lemonade every day, living is good"), gossip about friends and family, and much more. Folding creases, light toning, mild separations along folds, few small holes along folds of second leaf with slight loss to text, closed tears to folds along lower margin.  [8259]
