1 pg. letter, approx. 8" x 9-3/4", dated atNew York City, Jan. 19, 1841
, from Seth W. Trife, Captain of the Barque "Marine", to the barque's owner, Thomas Richardson, at Boston, Mass.
Great content,
in which Capt. Trife informs Richardson of the Barque's safe arrival after a 24 day passage from Bordeaux, France, and relays the bad news that he lost his largest anchor and 16 fathoms of chain, forcing him to go back to port to procure another. He writes that the Barque has sailed much better since he took the copper off of her bottom, and advises that the barque "is in want of considerable rigging", and that since he joined the ship in New Orleans, he has had to "give her a new suit of sails".
The letter reads:
"Dear Sir,
This is to inform you of the Barque Marine's safe arrival, passage 24 days from Bordeaux. I wrote you a few days before I left by the Barque Mary Chilton for Insurance, but I was unfortunate to lose my largest anchor and 16 fathoms of chain, which obliged me to put back to procure another and I have made the other part of the chain answer. I have a copy of my Protest, &c.
The Barque has sailed much better since I took the copper off her bottom. The Barque is in want of considerable rigging. I have been obliged since I joined her at N. Orleans to give her a new suit of sails, which has made my expenses high. The Bark now lays at the foot of Oliver Street, East River. Should you not come on, please direct your letter to the care of S.H. Sire, N. York.
I remain your Obt. Servt.
Seth W. Trife"
The letter is in Fine condition. There is a scorch mark at the bottom left corner of the folded letter's address panel and another on the back. There are fold splits on the integral second sheet, which has the address panel, repaired with archival document tape.
