    Description

    1 pg. letter, approx. 7-1/2" x 12-3/4", dated at
    Bridgeport, Connecticut, June 20, 1837
, from Isaac Sherman, to William Fields, Comptroller of the State of Ct., at Hartford.
The stampless folded letter has a red BRIDGEPORT CON. cds postmark, red PAID handstamp, and manuscript "10" rate.
    The writer of this letter,
    ISAAC SHERMAN
    , (1788-1863), was the
    first Mayor
of the city of Bridgeport in 1836. He later was named Postmaster (1841).
Good content inquiring about the Revolutionary War service of Lt. Aaron Hawley  and William Wordin of Stratford, Ct. in 1777.
    Includes:
    "Sir,
I want you to send me a certificate of what you can find on the Paytable Books for Lieut. Aaron Hawley of Stratford.
He was appointed Lieut. of a Company of Guard, I expect, in the Autumn of 1776. He raised a company in sd. Stratford and commenced service in sd. Stratford January 1st, 1777 to guard the Town and served until January 1st, 1778. I want a certificate to prove that service for William Wordin, who served that year under sd. Hawley, as I wish to show that sd. Wordin served 12 months under sd. Hawley in 1777. I feel very anxious that you should send me a certificate by return of mail. Mark your fees on the letter and charge the same to me, and I will settle up in September.
    Yours Respectfully,
    Isaac Sherman"
