    Description

    1 pg. letter, approx. 7-1/2" x 9-3/4", dated at Middletown, Ct., July 29, 1823, from Samuel Spalding, and signed for him by Thomas Child, Jr., to Henry L. Camp, at Durham, Ct.
    The folded letter was privately carried outside of the mail and has no postmark (Durham is only about 6 miles from Middletown).

    in which Spalding returns the two banknotes that Henry Camp gave him the day before, one of which "is good for nothing", and the other is a "counterfeit".
    The letter reads:
    "Sir,
    Herewith you have Two Bank Bills which you passed to me yesterday. The ten dollar Pennsylvania Bill is good for nothing in this Market & the other Phoenix Bank is counterfeit, which I have charged back.
    I am Sir, yours &c.,
    For Sam'l Spalding
    Ths. Child Junr."
